Birth Photography is a wonderful way to preserve the many beautiful details and moments of the birth of your child. Over the past decade I have had the wonderful honor of photographing many families during the process of birth and after. These images tell a powerful story- one of love, hard work, anguish,  joy, and exaltation. My approach to birth photography has been informed by my fine art education at Rhode Island School of Design, where I obtained my BFA, my many years of experience as a photographer, and extensive experience as a birth doula and community advocate for health.

I consider it a deep honor to be invited into the circle that welcomes a new human life!

FAQs:

How many images will be part of the proofing gallery?

The circumstances surrounding will generally establish the number of shots.  I would say on average the number of images edited is around 100. I take great care in editing the images from the shoots, and only include those of the best quality.

Why hire a photographer that specializes in birth photography?

Birth Photography  requires a keen sense of respect, timing and skill.  Birth is a time of deep vulnerability and all those who are present at birth should ideally understand the importance of this to a family as well as nuances of working in birthing environments.  I have worked extensively in hospitals, home births and in birth center births. My work with families has allowed me to develop both a deep understanding of working in these environments and the importance of respectful relationships with providers and other birth support staff.

So How does this all work?

I generally like to meet with clients for an initial no commitment consultation, and if the family chooses to contract me to photograph the birth, I like to meet again to get better acquainted, discuss any further details, and confirm all the logistics of the contract. At the time of birth, I request that the family keep in close contact with me by phone, email and or text to alert me to the onset of labor. Since labor is usually an emerging process (unlike what you see in the movies!) I generally request that the family let me know of any progress or change in the early labor. This can be over the course of days, hours or weeks even. I will join the family when active labor is confirmed by your practitioner. Usually I join families at place of birth. The time I am with the family varies from labor to labor, but there is no limit to the amount of time I will be with the family.

If your labor is lengthly, I take periodic breaks to eat and rest. If the labor is stalled,  sometimes I will leave (with the family's blessing) and return when labor is established again. Every birth is different, and my training and experience as a doula have allowed me to work respecting the nature of the process. I request at least 2 hours before I am expected to join the family in labor, although I have been called to precipitous births where I had less notice- I request the lead time of two hours to ensure my presence. In the case of a medical emergency, where the family cannot contact me, or the situation does not allow for the birth to be photographed, the balance paid for birth photography (minus an on call fee of $200) can be used for any products or services I offer. The details of the balance transfer would be discussed and outlined in a new contract.

Do you take shots of the baby actually emerging from the mother?

As far as capturing the actual birth (crowning and birth of baby) many hospitals have a policy against pictures of actual birth for liability reasons. I must often refrain form photography of any part of the birth deemed a medical procedure and respect the guidelines of the institution while still capturing the emotion of the the birth.

Are you in the birthing room the entire time?

In most cases I am not in the birth/ labor room for the entire active labor (unless I am also the doula.) I recognize that even a family that wishes to have their birth photographed, also has the need for privacy and space during the process.

I will communicate as sensitively and unobtrusively as I can with the family about their comfort level as the birth occurs. My utmost concern is the comfort of the family. I have encountered families in the past with a family member that was nervous or hesitant to have the birth photographed. It is not unusual for people to feel camera shy, especially when their only experiences with photography have been self-conscious or uncomfortable at best. This is why I really see the need to connect with the family on a personal level before the day of birth. This is of course the most special day for both you and your partner, it is only natural to want to share it only with people with whom you feel completely comfortable!
